A Relationship Story: The View from the Ledge

We all do everything we can.  We work hard, we support our families, we contribute to our communities and we even try and squeeze in a little fun along the way.  However, sometimes we find ourselves questioning whether our current life is truly right for us.

In my mid-40’s, while my family life was great, I found myself unfulfilled in my work life. I felt like I was wearing two left shoes and just couldn’t get comfortable, and I didn’t know why.

I found myself on the ledge – that place where a real choice needed to be made. The plateau just didn’t feel right anymore…I knew I needed to jump off, so I just did – it’s been an incredible journey over the past 15 years.

I’ve been very fortunate to have found so much “on the other side” – fulfillment in my work where we create fit between our client companies and great new people, in the many community support roles where I get to serve, and also in so many amazing and enriching relationships. However, I can’t help but remember what the view was like standing on the ledge.

The view wasn’t very clear; in fact, it was really hazy. I could not see what was below as I decided to jump. I just had to believe that there was a safe landing spot. It took a lot to make that leap, to take that risk. However, while I could not see the future, I realize that I could “see” what was possible by looking inside and believing that I could have an impact, that I could find a new path, that I could make a difference.

The view from the ledge was a view inside myself; nothing I’ve ever done has provided me so much insight into what really matters to me. I wish all of you the chance to learn what you really are and are meant to be.

Thanks for sharing time with me; as always, I welcome your feedback.  Please feel free to pass this message along to others who may find value.
